Sand the existing jon boat paint surface or bare aluminum with 80-100 grit sandpaper. use a paint scraper or sander to remove any peeling paint or areas that are likely to cause peeling on your new paint.. So, before putting paint on your aluminum boat check with the experts! 1) degrease and clean the surface with dewaxer. 2) bring aluminum to a uniform bright finish by sandblasting with non-ferrous blast media such as clean silica sand or, if blasting is not possible, grind using a 36-grit wheel.. Years ago i had my 16' aluminum boat repainted (mid 90's). i stripped off all old paint first and then had a cousin (who does car painting on the side) do the painting for me..
